"North Shore" is a series of paintings on paper that reference northern landscapes, where rock, vegetation and water meet sky. In this suite, my approach to painting and recording landscape is simplified - I have reduced the lines of terrain and horizon into only a few essential, almost abstract gestures. My interest lies in expressing the movement and patterns that emerge from these views, as I have experienced them.
My approach to painting is strongly influenced by my initial background as a printmaker. Like state proofs in printmaking, this is a term that I use to describe the monochromatic paintings in this suite that reveal the visual framework of my landscapes. These images present an even more concise and direct vision of the same landscape - a highly distilled composition of sky and land.
Many of the finished paintings also include the initial line-drawings, as transcribed from my sketchbook. They show the source of my paintings and are as important to the work with their strong graphic element as the coloured brushstrokes.
"North Shore" explores the patterns and rhythms of the Ontario northland in a personal language of line and colour. The northern horizon is my subject matter but revealing my artistic process and the uninterrupted gesture of my hand are part of the final presentation.
